Charlotte's Uptown Second Ward Community is located in  the southeast quadrant of the city. It lies directly to the south of the intersection of Trade and Tryon and is bordered by East Trade Street, Tryon Street's business and entertainment district and the I-277 urban highway loop.

Second Ward was once known as Brooklyn, originally named after the renowned New York borough. It was Charlotte's most vibrant African-American neighborhood until it was razed during the “urban renewal” phase of the 1960's and 70's.

Today, Second Ward is home to most of the city and county government activities and is the site of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, and Marshall Park are all located in Second Ward.

As Charlotte's government district, Second Ward historically used to have no housing. Today it is considered Uptown's center of hospitality, with more than 3,000 hotel rooms.

It is also home to three upscale high-rise condos. First is the Madison which offers large flats and two-level condos in a full-amenity building. The price ranges from $400,000 to over $800,000.

The Skye Condominium features 67 luxury residential condominiums, 2 penthouse suites, 172-room limited-service hotel, ground floor retail and a rooftop restaurant and bar with spectacular panoramic views of Uptown Charlotte's skyline. There are several units available with price that ranges between $270 and $370 per square foot, depending on the view and floor.  

The Trust is Charlotte's most exclusive luxury condo residence. There are only eight custom condominiums here with prices well over $2 million. Amenities include a private rooftop terrace, wine vault, storage, and an in-house restaurant.

There's also The Ratcliffe, an upscale condominium high-rise located on South Tryon Street. It overlooks the Green, a public park that features artistic fountains and walkways. Currently, Second Ward is undergoing a surge in exciting new growth as Brooklyn is coming back to Charlotte.

Mecklenburg County began seeking proposals for the renewal of Second Ward, currently referred to as Brooklyn Village, on December 2015. They shortlisted three teams and went through the process. The Board of County Commissioners selected their partner in the redevelopment.  From a sterile government district, the project aims to transform the area to a vibrant, mixed use quarter while still maintaining the  balance between  history and the future.  

The $683 million project seeks to create a stream of economic returns to the local community by providing various boutiques, stores, and restaurants. It also aims to create opportunities for local entrepreneurs to establish businesses.

The project will also include at least 30 units of affordable housing on the Brooklyn Village site, for “households earning 80% of area median income annually or less.”

The development team, composed of BK Partners - Conformity Corp, The Peebles Corporation and Stantec- promises to deliver a blend of residential, retail, office, educational, cultural, and public space to boost the landscape of Uptown Charlotte over a 10 year period on a total of 2.3 million square feet of space.

The team's master plan includes the following:

  • 1,070 residential units including 107 affordable workforce units, triple the minimum amount set by the County

  • 170 condominiums

  • 680,000 square feet of office space, including a 22-story building

  • 250,000 square feet of retail space for boutiques, restaurants and local entrepreneurs, including three “big box” anchor tenants

  • 2 hotels (130-key boutique hotel unique to Charlotte; 150-key extended stay)

  • 1.9 acres of public green space and a 21st century public park, nearly 20% larger than the county-set minimum requirement

  • Nearly 4,000 square feet of cultural space

  • A pedestrian throughway called Myers Passage that connects Brooklyn Village North and South to each other and the First Ward, transit and much more, including to the Second Ward High School Gymnasium

  • $13.5 million of infrastructure improvements, including new pedestrian-friendly tree-lined streets

The construction on the first phase won't start until early 2019. Under the proposed timeline, the building would continue until 2025.
