The 1st District is nicknamed: The Garden District
Charlotte Uptown's First Ward Community is the first of the four Wards in Uptown Charlotte NC. Each Ward has its own distinct personality but First Ward is where it all starts.
First Ward's boundaries are E Trade St., N Tryon St., and I-277 (an urban loop highway).
First Ward in Uptown Charlotte NC is an award-winning mixed income district and is home to approximately 1,000 residents.
First Ward has come a long way in terms of development over the past 10 years, bringing in more residential homes and entertainment venues.
This community began as a vacant land with public housing and now has transformed into planned development by The Charlotte Housing Authority and Bank of America.
With the help of a $41.6 million HUD HOPE VI grant, First Ward is now fully developed and sprawling with new condos, townhomes, commercial buildings and universities.
Many new developments are still underway and currently under construction, including Levine Properties' new urban village project which is the UNC Charlotte's new academic building.
Plans for the urban village include 2,700 residential units, 250 hotel rooms, 450,000 sq ft of office space, 250,000 sq ft of retail space, a 4-acre park, and 450,000 sq ft of civic space.
Part of this recent development includes the Spirit Square Arts Center, Time Warner Arena,the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Levine Museum of the New South, Courtside Condos and the new UNCC (University of North Carolina Charlotte) Academic Building which is part of an Urban Village Project.
