History of Ballantyne
The Ballantyne area was once a large hunting tract owned by the Harris family, one of Charlotte’s oldest and most prestigious families.
In the mid-1990’s, Johnny Harris and his brother-in-law, Smoky Bissell, started Ballantyne Corporate Park. Harris had the 2,000 acres rezoned.
In October 1995, Bissell bought out his brothers-in-law’s shares for $20 million. He established Ballantyne and named it after his great aunt.
The community was developed with the mantra, “Live, Work, Play, and Stay” in mind.
The residential portion of Ballantyne was sold to Crescent Resources. The 610-acre land that was purchased would later become the Ballantyne Country Club and the accompanying residential development.
Ballantyne Corporate Park
Ballantyne is the largest planned community in the Charlotte metro area, encompassing the Ballantyne Corporate Park.
The 535-acre Ballantyne Corporate Park sits in the heart of the community and has over 4,000,000 square feet of Class A office space. Many national and international companies have their headquarters here like Babcock & Wilcox, Curtiss-Wright, Tree.com Inc., Snyder's-Lance Inc., Premier Inc., Extended Stay America, Inc., and Fortune 500 company SPX and ESPN regional television.
