Charlotte’s local leaders recently announced their plans to help resolve the homeless problem of Charlotte’s veterans. At present, it has been estimated that there are 150 homeless veterans in the Mecklenburg County alone.
‘Housing Our Heroes,’ a collaborative effort among different agencies, aim to look for homes for all the veterans in the city by the end of 2015. Currently, 50 veterans already have their own homes.
This program is part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s national effort launched in June referred to as “The Mayors Challenge to End Veterans Homelessness.”
“Every veteran who serves this nation and defends our freedoms deserves to have a home,” Executive Director of the Salisbury Veteran’s Medical Center Kaye Green said.
About 20 people were assigned to go into the community next year to promote and encourage employers to hire veterans.
“You can’t ask for a better tenant, a better employee, a better community member than a veteran. They’ve proved themselves over and over again. You can trust veterans,” Mayor Dan Clodfelter said.
Charlotte Bridge Home is one of the organisations who have taken part of this program with its outreach specialist leading the initiative.
