Almost every citizen of Charlotte has been looking forward to the opening night since it was announced that Charlotte Hornets would replace Charlotte Bobcats. Luckily, the team didn’t fail the 19,439 fans who witnessed the game as they beat the Milwaukee Bucks 108-106 in the overtime in the 2014-15 regular-season opener held at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
It was also worth it for Michael Jordan, owner of the basketball team after spending $5 million just to bring back the name Charlotte Hornets and for spending another $58 million last Tuesday to extend the contract of point guard Kemba Walker for another four years.
A fourth-year professional, Walker sent two shots that made the biggest comeback in the team’s history as the Hornets beat the Bucks in the overtime.
“We rallied,” Walker said after drilling the game-winning 21-bart winning shot five seconds before the end of the overtime.
Before the game actually started, Walker took the microphone and told the crowd, “Without further adieu, let’s get this party started.” He certainly did even it took him until the overtime to make good on his promise.
Though it was an exciting win, the team struggled throughout the game, even trailing by 24 points midway the third quarter. But during the fourth quarter, Walker’s 3 points 1.6 seconds left before the end of the game gave them a chance to reach overtime with 100-100.
Walker got 26 points, which led all scorers. The team is set to return to court this Saturday, November 1 for a game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
In 2006, majority owner of Charlotte’s basketball team Robert Johnson recruited Michael Jordan as a minority investor. Four years later, the NBA superstar bought 80% stake in the franchise for $175 million.
