Showcase Realty Holds Safety Training Workshop for Real Estate Agents

How to stay safe when showing a property

How to stay safe when showing a property?
It’s 5pm on a Friday and you are showing your last property of the day. A man appears. He becomes persistent to come inside. His voice gets louder and he pushes you inside the home and slams the door. Do you know what to do? Do you know how to protect yourself? Join Showcase Realty for a violence prevention workshop to teach Real Estate Agents to prepare for and how to avoid dangerous situations.

Showcase Realty, in collaboration with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, will hold a Real Estate Safety Training Workshop, February 18, 2015 at 10 a.m. This safety training workshop will take place at Showcase Realty’s South End office located at 1430 South Mint Street in Charlotte. The workshop is free and open to licensed Brokers in Mecklenburg County, but seating is limited and agents must RSVP to attend.

Although Charlotte has experienced only a small number of violent crimes targeting Real Estate agents, other high profile national news stories serve as a brutal wake-up call to always be prepared to defend oneself. In 2014, Arkansas Real Estate agent Beverly Carter was kidnaped and murdered while showing a property for sale. The suspect in the case saw Carver as a target of opportunity because “she worked alone”.

“We should never take our safety or the safety of our colleagues for granted,” says Nancy Braun, Owner and Broker-in-Charge of Showcase Realty. “This safety training workshop is an opportunity to come together as Brokers to help keep each other safe.”

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Charlotte had 42 homicides reported in 2014 down 20% from the year before. The number of reported rapes in Charlotte was decreased in 2014 from 53 to 42. But aggravated assaults rose by 7% from 3,006 in 2013 to 3,217 in 2014. The most important advice from the police is for citizens to remain alert and to be aware of their surroundings.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer and Crime Prevention Specialist, Christopher Kopp will lead the workshop by showing agents how to stay safe when showing a property. A former United States Marine, Officer Kopp has led numerous trainings to maximize their knowledge of crime prevention and awareness. Officer Koop has more than eight years of police experience and enjoys getting the community involved with law enforcement and keeping individuals and their community safe. The 1-hour demonstration incorporates technology, media and the education of firearms to keep information relevant to the changing times.
