Third Ward, known as the west quadrant, is nestled between Tryon Street, I-77, and West Trade Street. It is the most diverse of the city's four original quadrants.
Third Ward used to be home to the Victor Cotton Mill in the 1800s. When the mill closed, the land around the mill was converted to neighborhood housing.

Anchoring the west side of Third Ward is Gateway Village, the largest current development. It is 1,500,000 sq ft (140,000 m2) in size, and home to offices, shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and over 500 housing units. The Charlotte Campus of Johnson & Wales University is also located in Gateway Village.
